Coffin Hop: Interview with Jeremy C. Shipp
Jeremy C. Shipp is one of my favorite horror authors, and anyone who's friends with him on Facebook knows he's got quite a sense of humor, as well.
Jolie du Pre: What drew you to the genre of horror writing?
Jeremy C. Shipp: This is a difficult question to answer, because I have always been interested in horror, in what lurks in the dark. When I was a little boy, me and my brothers would play pretend. Some of our recurring characters included the grim reaper, a floating head, and a friendly mummy. In 4th grade, I wrote a rather twisted short story about a monstrous alien.
Jolie: What does it mean to you to be a Bram Stoker Award-nominated author?
Jeremy: Ah, I remember when I first heard the news. I was surprised, elated, honored. I immediately threw on my red cap and dashed into my garden to perform a celebratory gnomic jig.
Jolie: I found the stories in ABERRATIONS to be excellent. Do you find anthology editing easy or difficult?
Jeremy: Editing an anthology is a lot of hard work, and it can be very time consuming. When working on a book with open submissions, I might have to read through five hundred stories. I never use slush readers to narrow down the queue for me. I look at every story. As I said, editing is hard work, but it's fun, and satisfying.
Jolie: Tell us about your ATTIC CLOWNS series.
Jeremy: I've been dealing with clowns in my attic for many years now. Every day they squirt acid at me with their flowers. They throw flaming pies at my face. They replace my organs with balloon animals. As an exercise in catharsis, I decided to start writing about these monstrous jesters. So far I've released four volumes of ATTIC CLOWNS, and that won't be the end of them. There is even an Attic Clown comic book in the works.
Jolie: If there is one thing you could tell all horror writers, what would it be?
Jeremy: I'd say, “Hey, how's it going? I like your hat. So, what is it that you do? Oh cool, I write horror too. What sort of projects are you working on now? Sounds great. Hey, do you want to get some chili cheese fries and hang out?”
